Which part of the palace can you visit?

This route visits the public East Gardens and Edo Castle's surviving keep foundation, then optionally Kitanomaru Park. It does not enter the imperial residence or include a guided palace tour. Expect historic remains and outdoor green space, not an intact castle tower or an indoor palace visit.

Check the calendar first

The East Gardens are free. Normal closures are Monday and Friday, with national-holiday exceptions and Tuesday closure after a holiday Monday. February 23 and December 28–January 3 are also closed; imperial functions can add restrictions. Check your exact date on the official calendar.

In October, last entry is 16:00 and closing 16:30. From November through February, last entry is 15:30 and closing 16:00. Other months have different hours. Start in the morning rather than arriving near the deadline.

Use a public gate

Ote-mon is about five minutes from Otemachi exit C13a according to the official Japanese access guide. Expect baggage inspection and bring a small bag. The map pin marks the castle foundation inside the gardens, not a shortcut through a restricted boundary. Follow the garden map from the gate.

Allow roughly 90 minutes, an editorial estimate rather than a mandatory circuit. Choose paths according to your mobility and posted signs. The line linking the cards is not a guaranteed accessible walking route.

Optional Kitanomaru extension

Use the northern public exit and pedestrian paths towards Kitanomaru, leaving 20–30 minutes for orientation and crossings. Continue only if you want more walking. Allow about an hour for a seated lunch before or after the park, selecting an open restaurant outside the garden route. Carry water instead of depending on an unverified cafe stop.

Rain and closure alternatives

Both stops are outdoors. Move this outing to another day in steady rain. If the East Gardens are closed, Kitanomaru can be considered separately after checking park notices, but it does not grant entry to the gardens or residence. For another outdoor option, see our Tokyo gardens route.

Fit this into a longer Japan trip

Use the 14-day Japan itinerary to place this visit in a complete route with hotel nights, transfer days and luggage planning. Choose the matching city day or half-day; optional alternatives replace part of the plan rather than adding another full day.
