Before you go

Official references are dated below. Route choices, walking allowances and meal plans are our suggestions, not live directions. Recheck notices for your travel date.

Start here · station & exit

Begin at JR Onomichi Station, not Shin-Onomichi Shinkansen station. Follow the museum’s directions to the ropeway lower station; the ropeway ride is about three minutes.

Getting between stops

Allow 20–30 minutes between the hillside temple and museum paths, then 45–60 minutes for the descent and onward journey to Jodo-ji. Use a bus or taxi if the final walk is too much.

Our planning suggestionOur transfer allowances include walking and waiting; confirm the actual connection on the day.
Entry, hours & reservations

Senko-ji Temple: Special temple areas or experiences may have separate access; the ropeway is a separate fare. Onomichi City Museum of Art: 09:00–17:00, last entry 16:30. Normally closed non-holiday Mondays, exhibition-change periods and December 29–January 3. Jodo-ji Temple, Onomichi: Ask about current interior and garden access on arrival; do not assume every part is open without a separate arrangement.

Food & rest breaks

Meal stops below are editorial suggestions rather than verified restaurant reservations.

Our planning suggestionTake lunch after descending and rest before continuing east. Do not rely on a particular hilltop café being open during exhibition changes.
If it rains

Skip steep wet paths in heavy rain. Use the museum only if open and reachable safely; on a closure day, postpone the hillside rather than treating the ropeway as guaranteed shelter.

Finish with a respectful visit to the temple grounds east of the centre. Confirm access before expecting to enter paid interiors or gardens.

Allow 20–30 minutes between the hillside temple and museum paths, then 45–60 minutes for the descent and onward journey to Jodo-ji. Use a bus or taxi if the final walk is too much. These allowances exclude meals and longer queues.

Meals, weather and choosing the date
