10 days in Japan: a first-trip route with three bases

A 10-day starting route through Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, with arrival and transfer days set aside and a slower alternative to consider.

The route at a glance

This is a suggested planning framework, not a booked tour or a timetable-checked personal itinerary. It assumes nine nights in Japan, arrival in Tokyo on day one and departure from the Osaka area on day ten. Your flight dates may require a different first or final night.

  • Days 1–4: Tokyo, four nights.
  • Days 5–7: Kyoto, three nights.
  • Days 8–9: Osaka, two nights.
  • Day 10: departure.

Count nights before reserving hotels. An overnight flight does not automatically count as a night in Japan.

Days 1–4: start with Tokyo

Keep arrival day free of prepaid sightseeing. Reach your accommodation, eat nearby and decide how much energy you have left. Use days two and three for two different neighbourhood groups rather than crossing the city repeatedly. Reserve day four for your strongest interest or an activity moved by rain.

Our Tokyo three-day itinerary offers an eastern-city day and a western-city day. Treat its third day as flexible; you do not need to complete every suggestion.

Days 5–7: give Kyoto a focused block

Use day five for the transfer and a modest evening near your accommodation. A travel day includes packing, reaching the station, finding the correct platform and checking in, not just the train ride.

Spend the next two days in separate sightseeing areas. The Kyoto two-day route explains one way to avoid putting opposite sides of the city into a single day. Shift outdoor plans if the forecast changes.

Days 8–10: finish in Osaka

Move to Osaka on day eight, settle in and choose one evening area. Keep day nine for your main Osaka interest. On day ten, work backwards from your airline's check-in guidance and your actual airport transfer.

The Osaka two-day outline can be shortened if your departure removes the second day.

When this route is too busy

If changing hotels twice feels like too much, choose either Kyoto or Osaka as your Kansai base and visit the other city separately. Compare door-to-door journeys from the hotels you are considering. A central-looking pin is not enough to establish an easy commute.

If you fly home from Tokyo, revise the final nights before booking anything. Do not assume that returning from Kansai on departure morning will suit your flight.

Before booking

Choose flight airports, count usable sightseeing days, then assign nights. Only after those decisions should you reserve date-specific activities. Check operators for current routes, fares, opening days and booking conditions; this framework deliberately does not quote live prices.
