This itinerary is for travellers who want to spend time with exhibitions away from central Tokyo. Day 1 is Tokyo Fuji Art Museum in Hachioji; Day 2 is the Polar Science Museum in Tachikawa. They are not adjacent. Use them as two flexible half-days rather than trying to add a zoo and eastern Tokyo sightseeing to the same schedule. Stop lengths are our estimates, not venue requirements.
Two separate museum outings
Day 1: arrive through Hachioji
Start from JR Hachioji Station's north exit. The museum lists Nishi-Tokyo Bus platform 14 for morning services until 12:29, and platform 12 via Hiyodori-Yama Tunnel after 12:31. Select a service for Soka University Main Gate / Tokyo Fuji Art Museum or the appropriate Soka University loop, confirming the stop with the display or driver. Get off at the museum stop. Check the official directions for your departure time rather than assuming one platform all day.
Allow a generous arrival buffer for finding the bus and traffic. There is no fixed train-to-gallery travel time in this itinerary. Confirm the return service before entering so you can leave without rushing at closing time.
Art, tickets and lunch
The museum opens 10:00–17:00 with last entry at 16:30. It normally closes Mondays, moving the closure to Tuesday after a holiday Monday, plus exhibition-change and year-end periods. Prices depend on the exhibition. For October 3–December 27, 2026, the official page lists adult same-day admission at ¥1,500 and online tickets at ¥1,200. Check your exact date; this is not a permanent year-round price.
Give the galleries about two hours, choosing the current exhibition before you travel. Café Restaurant Seine is in the new wing, first floor. Its listed hours are 10:00–16:30, last orders 16:00, with museum closure days. Allow 45–60 minutes for lunch, check the day's menu and keep Hachioji Station as a fallback if the cafe is unavailable.
Day 2: public museum, not a research-office visit
Use Tama Monorail Takamatsu Station, one stop from Tachikawa-Kita, then follow the museum's ten-minute walking route. Alternatively take a bus via Tachikawa City Hall from the north side of Tachikawa Station. The official page lists Tachikawa Gakujutsu Plaza followed by a one-minute walk, or City Hall followed by five minutes. Use the public museum entrance, not an office building. The English map pin has been corrected to the museum location shown on its official access map.
Polar science and closure days
The museum is free and opens 10:00–17:00, last entry 16:30. It closes Sundays, Mondays, the third Tuesday, public holidays, summer closure days and the year-end period. These rules differ from the art museum: check both calendars before choosing consecutive days. For a small independent party, the guide does not require the group booking used for parties of twenty or more.
Allow 60–90 minutes to explore at your own pace. Do not assume a guided explanation will be in English or available at your arrival time. The museum has no space for meals, so plan lunch before the visit or return towards Tachikawa afterwards.
Rain and optional outdoor time
Both museum visits offer indoor time, but bus stops and station approaches are outdoors. In heavy rain, keep the day short and check transport notices. If either museum is closed, use the other on a suitable date rather than arriving on the assumption that all museums share one calendar. For a separate outdoor outing, see western Tokyo family parks.
