Before you go

Official references are dated below. Route choices, walking allowances and meal plans are our suggestions, not live directions. Recheck notices for your travel date.

Start here · station & exit

The science museum lists a five-minute walk from JR Ueno Station Park Exit.

Our planning suggestionMetro and Keisei arrivals use different approaches. Carry an umbrella for the outdoor walk.
Getting between stops

Tokyo National Museum uses its Main Gate for visitor entry.

Our planning suggestionAllow 15–20 minutes between museums, including entrance orientation. The map line is a stop sequence, not a covered walking route.
Entry, hours & reservations

Standard adult admission is JPY 630 at the science museum and JPY 1,000 for the Tokyo National Museum collection. Special exhibitions are separate.

Our planning suggestionBudget JPY 1,630 for both standard tickets. Check opening calendars and ticket conditions before leaving.
Food & rest breaks

The science museum lists a restaurant, cafe and eating lounge; rainy-day lounge crowding is noted.

Our planning suggestionReserve 45–60 minutes for lunch and rest. Check menus directly for dietary needs.
If it rains

Both museums normally close on Mondays, with public-holiday exceptions. Temporary closures are published separately.

Our planning suggestionIf both are closed, change the day. Keep the route to one museum if the weather or your energy makes the outdoor transfer uncomfortable.

An indoor-focused day, with outdoor connections

This route keeps the day in Ueno: the National Museum of Nature and Science first, lunch, then Tokyo National Museum. You still walk outside from the station and between buildings. Bring suitable footwear and an umbrella; this is not an all-weather covered route.

Choose one museum if you like to read exhibits slowly, have tired children or arrive after lunch. Two museums are an option, not a completion target. This day can replace the outdoor Ueno portion of our Tokyo three-day course.

Check the date before leaving

Both museums normally close on Mondays, with holiday exceptions. Do not use one as an automatic Monday substitute for the other. Check both official calendars, including temporary and year-end closures. If neither opens on your date, move this course to another day rather than travelling to Ueno expecting admission.

At our check, the science museum lists renovation closures affecting parts of the Global Gallery. Tokyo National Museum also publishes temporary room closures. Confirm any must-see exhibition before buying. National Museum of Nature and Science: admission; Tokyo National Museum: hours, admission and closures.

Morning: science and natural history

Start at JR Ueno Station's Park Exit. The science museum gives a five-minute walk from that exit; Metro and Keisei arrivals have different approaches. National Museum of Nature and Science: access.

Our suggested visit is 09:30–12:00. Choose a few galleries rather than rushing through everything. The usual science museum hours are 09:00–17:00, with entry ending 30 minutes earlier. Standard adult permanent-exhibition admission is JPY 630; special exhibitions have their own arrangements.

Lunch without another cross-city journey

Plan 45–60 minutes for lunch before moving on. The science museum lists a restaurant, a cafe and a lounge where eating is permitted. It warns that the lounge can be busy on rainy days. Check current menus and access conditions; do not rely on finding an immediate seat. National Museum of Nature and Science: restaurants and rest areas.

Afternoon: Tokyo National Museum

Allow 15–20 minutes for the outdoor transfer and orientation at the entrance; this is an editorial allowance. Plan a focused afternoon visit rather than trying to see every building.

Tokyo National Museum's collection ticket is JPY 1,000 for adults, with special exhibitions ticketed separately. Standard closing is 17:00 and last admission is 30 minutes before closing. Main-gate entry includes security checks. Suitcases are not permitted under the current visitor notice. Tokyo National Museum: hours, admission and closures.

For one adult paying both standard admission charges, the combined ticket budget is JPY 1,630, excluding food, transport and special exhibitions. Confirm eligibility for any concession directly.

Bags, children and a slower version

Leave travel luggage at your accommodation before setting out; the science museum also prohibits large suitcases. Do not use this as a guaranteed luggage-storage plan after checkout.

For a slower day, spend the morning and early afternoon in one museum with a proper meal break. Ask staff about current accessibility arrangements and rest spaces; the map does not certify a step-free route. In severe weather or transport disruption, follow local advice rather than preserving the itinerary.

Return and the next day

Walk back towards the Ueno station appropriate to your rail line. Allow more time in heavy rain and avoid a tight evening reservation.

If you have just landed, use our Tokyo arrival-day guide to decide whether a museum visit fits your remaining energy. Return to the Tokyo three-day route for the rest of your stay.

Official references checked on 20 October 2026. Suggested visit durations and transfer buffers are editorial estimates.
