Before you go

Official references are dated below. Route choices, walking allowances and meal plans are our suggestions, not live directions. Recheck notices for your travel date.

Start here · station & exit

Begin at Amanohashidate Station and follow the operator’s directions to the sightseeing boat or use a current local bus to the north shore. The shrine is on the north side of the sandbar.

Getting between stops

Use the north-shore connection to Fuchu, the cable transport towards Kasamatsu and the Nariai mountain bus. Allow at least 60–90 minutes for the uphill sequence and temple approach, plus a separate return buffer; check each last service.

Our planning suggestionOur transfer allowances include walking and waiting; confirm the actual connection on the day.
Entry, hours & reservations

Motoise Kono Shrine: Shrine worship does not include sightseeing boats, cable transport or temple admission. Nariai-ji Temple: Check the Nariai mountain-bus ticket conditions and temple admission together before departure.

Food & rest breaks

Meal stops below are editorial suggestions rather than verified restaurant reservations.

Our planning suggestionEat on the north shore before going uphill and carry water. Do not rely on a mountain café being open or rush lunch to catch the final bus.
If it rains

Skip the mountain section if wind, rain or service suspension makes it impractical. The operator lists a Kasamatsu Park closure on December 18, 2026; choose another day for this route.

The map shows places rather than turn-by-turn directions; check live transport and the linked opening calendars before setting out.

Day 1: Amanohashidate north shore and Nariai-ji

This route is in Miyazu, northern Kyoto Prefecture, not Kyoto city. If starting in Kyoto city, reserve a substantial intercity travel window or stay locally the night before. Visit Kono Shrine first, then attempt the mountain temple only with enough time for the return connections.

Motoise Kono Shrine

Visit the shrine on the north side of Amanohashidate before the mountain journey. Follow the signs about photography and worship.

Nariai-ji Temple

Visit the mountain temple only after checking the uphill and return transport. This is not a short flat walk from the shrine.

Use the north-shore connection to Fuchu, the cable transport towards Kasamatsu and the Nariai mountain bus. Allow at least 60–90 minutes for the uphill sequence and temple approach, plus a separate return buffer; check each last service. These allowances exclude meals and longer queues.

Meals, weather and choosing the date
