YOUR DAYS, AT A GLANCE

Follow the neighbourhoods

Kiyomizu-dera and Gion2 stops

Before you go

Official references are dated below. Route choices, walking allowances and meal plans are our suggestions, not live directions. Recheck notices for your travel date.

Start here · station & exit

JR West identifies Kiyomizu-Gojo Station Exit 4. Kiyomizu-dera gives a 25-minute walk from the station and warns that apps may suggest incorrect entrances. Approach via Nio-mon at the top of Kiyomizu-zaka or the entrance at the top of Chawan-zaka.

Our planning suggestionAllow extra time for the uphill walk and travel light.
Getting between stops

Kyoto City recommends rail-based access to Higashiyama to reduce reliance on congested buses.

Our planning suggestionContinue downhill via Sannenzaka, Ninenzaka and the Yasaka area towards Gion. Budget 45–60 minutes before shopping or meals. This suggested route includes slopes and steps; it is not a step-free route.
Entry, hours & reservations

Kiyomizu-dera opens at 06:00; closing times vary by season. Special visits and night openings have separate schedules.

Our planning suggestionCheck the official visitor information for the current admission charge and special-event conditions. No general ticket price or special-event walk-in availability is assumed here.
Food & rest breaks

Keihan introduces the temple approaches and Gion as areas with shops and food stops.

Our planning suggestionPlan a seated lunch after the temple, before the walk into Gion. Leave about an hour plus a water break; snack stops alone do not provide much rest. Check dietary requirements directly.
If it rains

The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto publishes exhibition admission and opening information separately.

Our planning suggestionIn sustained rain, replace the outdoor hill-and-street route with a museum visit in Okazaki after checking its calendar. This requires a separate transfer; it is not next door to Kiyomizu-dera.

Make the temple your main visit, allowing time for the sloping approach streets. Check the official opening calendar before setting out.

Decide what two days can hold

This suggested route uses two full sightseeing days. If one is a transfer day, select one area for that day and move the rest to a future visit. The goal is a coherent trip, not a complete inventory of Kyoto.

The official Kyoto itinerary collection separates routes by area. Our recommendation is to use the same planning principle: choose one main area for each day, then add only what still fits your energy and reservations.

Day 1: eastern Kyoto

Use the Kiyomizu-dera and Higashiyama area as your principal focus. Continue towards the Yasaka-jinja and Gion area only if your chosen stops leave time. Plan your own starting point using your accommodation location and the official access information.

Decide which temple or cultural visit matters most before departure. A named district can contain enough to occupy a day; putting three district names on a list does not make them a short outing.

Leave room for lunch and a seated break. When photographing, follow posted signs and respect private property and people using the streets.

Day 2: Arashiyama and Saga

Make the western side of Kyoto its own day rather than a late add-on after the eastern route. The map uses Tenryu-ji and Togetsukyo Bridge as two anchors. Select a small number of places from the official local itineraries. Prioritise the one you would most regret missing.

Check your return route before setting off on a longer walk. If a particular garden or temple has a closing time, work backwards from it instead of assuming every stop can be visited late in the afternoon.

When to choose a different second day

If you have a fixed booking elsewhere, organise the day around that location. If long walks are difficult, shorten the geographical range and research the access arrangements of each selected place. This outline is not an accessibility assessment.

In heavy rain, consider swapping the days or replacing a long outdoor section with a researched indoor visit. Confirm that the alternative is open on your date.

Fit Kyoto into a longer trip

Our fourteen-day Japan framework leaves extra Kyoto time for recovery and personal interests. If you are continuing to Osaka, see the Osaka two-day outline.

Do not infer a guaranteed journey time from the sequence of these suggestions. Check routes, openings and reservation requirements with the official providers for your dates.

Plan transport and a shorter stay

Use Getting around Kyoto to choose stations for each day. Staying in Osaka with one day available? Follow the Kyoto day-trip route. For a different shrine visit, compare the options in our Fushimi Inari guide.
