Pair Kaju-ji and Daigo-ji’s Sanbo-in on one day, then visit Kiyomizu-dera and Kodai-ji without mixing distant districts into the same afternoon. Stop lengths and transfer buffers are our planning estimates, not official journey times. The map shows places rather than turn-by-turn directions; check live transport and the linked opening calendars before setting out.
Is this route for you?
Day 1: Kaju-ji and Sanbo-in
Make southeast Kyoto a dedicated day. Kaju-ji offers a compact pond-garden visit before the larger Daigo-ji precinct. Keep to Sanbo-in and the lower area; climbing to Kami-Daigo would need a separate hiking plan.
Kaju-ji Temple
Walk the pond garden at a gentle pace. Autumn colour and small seasonal blossoms vary with weather; photographs are illustrative.
Sanbo-in at Daigo-ji
Focus on Sanbo-in in the lower Daigo-ji precinct. A mountain hike to Kami-Daigo is not included in this afternoon.
Return towards Ono, take the Tozai Line to Daigo and walk to the temple precinct. Allow 35–50 minutes overall between Kaju-ji and Sanbo-in. These allowances exclude meals and longer queues.
Day 2: Kiyomizu-dera and Kodai-ji
Give the uphill Kiyomizu approach a morning of its own, then have lunch before moving north through public Higashiyama streets. Avoid entering private lanes for photographs; a slow afternoon at Kodai-ji is enough.
Kiyomizu-dera Temple
Allow time for the uphill approach, the public temple route and the descent. Keep to public streets on the way through Higashiyama.
Kodai-ji Temple
Explore the temple garden and public buildings after lunch. Some paths climb; a night event is a different planning decision from this daytime visit.
Allow 30–45 minutes between the two temples via public streets, more if stopping in shops. Do not book the second visit immediately after the first. These allowances exclude meals and longer queues.
Meals, weather and choosing the date
Day 1: Plan lunch around the station transfer before the longer Daigo-ji visit. Confirm options before leaving the station area. Gardens and connecting paths remain exposed. Shorten the gardens in light rain, or choose an open museum day for sustained rain.
Day 2: Take a seated lunch after descending from Kiyomizu-dera, with time to rest before Kodai-ji’s slopes and paths. Wet stone and steps need care. If rain is heavy, swap this day with an open indoor museum day; special night openings are not an automatic fallback.
