Before you go

Official references are dated below. Route choices, walking allowances and meal plans are our suggestions, not live directions. Recheck notices for your travel date.

Start here · station & exit

Start at Kintetsu Nara and use the signed park route or a current local bus towards Todai-ji.

Getting between stops

Allow 35–50 minutes between the main hall area and Kasuga via public paths. The large precincts mean gate-to-gate timings can understate the walking.

Our planning suggestionAllowances include walking and waiting; use current directions for the actual service.
Entry, hours & reservations

Todai-ji Temple: The Great Buddha Hall and other paid facilities have separate visiting arrangements; check the current temple admission before travel. Kasuga Taisha: Outer grounds and paid sanctuary areas differ. Ceremonies can restrict special admission; check the current notice before visiting.

Food & rest breaks

Eat near the park between visits, then sit before the second approach. Avoid carrying exposed food through groups of deer.

Our planning suggestionMeal and rest stops are editorial suggestions, not restaurant reservations.
If it rains

Shorten outdoor park detours and give priority to the paid hall when open. Both temple and shrine visits still require exposed walking.

Who this route suits

A two-day temple itinerary that gives central Nara and the Horyu-ji area separate travel days. This route favours time at the places themselves over collecting stops. The stay lengths and transfer buffers below are editorial planning estimates, not live schedules. Use the map to identify places and the official links to check your travel date.

Day 1: Todai-ji and Kasuga

Put the Great Buddha Hall first and the shrine second, with a full lunch between them. Leave other park attractions optional so you can spend time inside the main visiting areas. Keep food secured around deer and avoid crowding animals for photographs.

Kasuga Taisha

Day 2: Horyu-ji and Chugu-ji

Travel to Ikaruga for a separate day rather than squeezing it into the end of Nara Park. Explore Horyu-ji at a comfortable pace, then continue to nearby Chugu-ji before its earlier seasonal closing.

Horyu-ji Temple

Allow an unhurried visit to the temple’s major precincts and treasures. This stop is in Ikaruga, outside central Nara, so give it a separate day.

Chugu-ji Temple

Continue east from Horyu-ji for a quieter sculpture-focused visit. Follow the temple’s rules for viewing its seated figure.

Allow 20–30 minutes from your last Horyu-ji visiting area to Chugu-ji, including leaving the precinct and finding its entrance. Leave a separate station-return buffer.

Have lunch near the temple approach before Chugu-ji, keeping its last admission in mind. Carry some cash for smaller establishments.

Use sheltered visiting areas when open, but do not expect an entirely indoor circuit. In severe weather, move the Ikaruga day.

Before you leave

Confirm opening dates, last admission and any timed tickets before starting. Carry a charged phone for tickets and directions, and leave room for queues and a seated meal. Historic paths may have steps or uneven surfaces; check the official accessibility details if you need a step-free route. Photos show the actual places at the time they were taken, not a guarantee of today’s foliage, displays or access.
