Who this route suits

Two major western Nara temples linked by a manageable walk, without a cross-city sightseeing rush. This route favours time at the places themselves over collecting stops. The stay lengths and transfer buffers below are editorial planning estimates, not live schedules. Use the map to identify places and the official links to check your travel date.

Day 1: Yakushi-ji and Toshodai-ji

This route concentrates on western Nara, making a practical day for travellers interested in architecture and Buddhist art. Give both temples time rather than adding central Nara at the end.

Toshodai-ji Temple

Continue to a second major temple without crossing Nara city. Leave time for the grounds and respect areas reserved for religious use.

Yakushi-ji’s visitor guide gives roughly 10–15 minutes from its north reception to Toshodai-ji. Budget 25–35 minutes overall from your last hall, including a rest.

Before you leave

Confirm opening dates, last admission and any timed tickets before starting. Carry a charged phone for tickets and directions, and leave room for queues and a seated meal. Historic paths may have steps or uneven surfaces; check the official accessibility details if you need a step-free route. Photos show the actual places at the time they were taken, not a guarantee of today’s foliage, displays or access.
