This route groups three places around Arashiyama rather than adding a river cruise or distant evening restaurant. Allow a full day if you want lunch, photographs and the uphill visit without rushing. The time allowances below are our suggestions, not official journey guarantees.
Keep the day in Arashiyama
Morning: Tenryu-ji's garden
Begin at Tenryu-ji and choose how much of the temple you want to see. The garden is the core visit; the buildings are a separate addition, with their own access restrictions. Allow about an hour for the garden, longer if you add the buildings and spend time looking at the pond landscape.
The official page lists garden entry at ¥500 for high-school age and above, ¥300 for elementary and junior-high pupils, and free for younger children. Usual garden hours are 08:30–17:00, with last entry at 16:50. Buildings cost an additional ¥300 and have earlier last admission. Events can restrict access; the notice currently includes partial building closures on October 29–30, 2026. Check the calendar for your date rather than assuming every ticketed area opens together.
River crossing and a proper break
Continue south towards Togetsukyo Bridge. We suggest 15–25 minutes for the walk from the temple area with brief stops, then twenty minutes around the river. These are planning allowances. Keep to pedestrian routes and avoid standing in the flow of people while taking photographs.
Make lunch a deliberate break before the uphill portion. Choose a restaurant near your route after checking its menu, queue and opening hours. Keep the meal near the river so you can continue without another transport leg. Carry water for the next walk and skip the climb if the group needs an easier afternoon.
Afternoon choice: Monkey Park Iwatayama
The monkey park is on the hillside south of the bridge. Kyoto City's official listing places its access about five minutes from Hankyu Arashiyama Station; that is not the full climb or total visit. Allow around ninety minutes for walking up, observing and returning, and check the entrance information before committing.
The park's operator currently publishes its detailed visitor information on its official visitor page. Check its current hours, admission and weather notices before visiting. We do not promise entry solely from a suggested timetable. Follow staff instructions around the wild monkeys, do not touch them and use only the permitted feeding arrangements. The rest-area feeding setup is described by the Kyoto Museums Association.
Rain and an easier alternative
On a wet day, drop the hillside visit and shorten the bridge walk. Tenryu-ji's buildings can provide an indoor element when open, but the garden and approaches remain outdoors. In sustained bad weather, move this day rather than treating the route as fully sheltered. Seasonal foliage and clear views are not guaranteed.
