Before you go

Official references are dated below. Route choices, walking allowances and meal plans are our suggestions, not live directions. Recheck notices for your travel date.

Start here · station & exit

Start at JR Inari Station beside the shrine approach, or walk east about five minutes from Keihan Fushimi-Inari Station.

Getting between stops

Allow 25–35 minutes on foot to Tofuku-ji and 30–45 minutes onwards to Sennyu-ji as editorial buffers. Tofuku-ji lists ten minutes from Tofukuji Station; Sennyu-ji lists twenty minutes from that station.

Our planning suggestionMap lines connect stops; they are not turn-by-turn or step-free directions.
Entry, hours & reservations

Check Tofuku-ji autumn prices and special-opening tickets. Sennyu-ji has separate precinct/special-viewing charges; Shinshoden closes on the fourth Monday. See the dated details below.

Food & rest breaks

Tofuku-ji lists access from Tofukuji Station; Sennyu-ji is farther from the same station.

Our planning suggestionEditorial plan: take a 45–60-minute seated lunch near the station before the uphill final leg. Check menus and opening hours locally; carry water.
If it rains

Sennyu-ji lists a twenty-minute walk from Tofukuji Station. Transfers between the temples include outdoor walking.

Our planning suggestionEditorial alternative: shorten the torii walk and omit the uphill final stop in persistent rain; check museum calendars before switching to the linked art route.

Choose this route for a temple day

This day connects three southern Kyoto sites without returning across the city. Start at Fushimi Inari, continue to Tofuku-ji and make Sennyu-ji the optional final stop. Allow a full sightseeing day with lunch. The suggested stop lengths and walking buffers are editorial planning estimates; crowds, stairs and individual pace can change them.

Morning: a short Fushimi Inari visit

JR Inari Station is directly beside the shrine approach; the shrine also lists a five-minute walk east from Keihan Fushimi-Inari Station. Explore the lower shrine and a manageable section of torii paths. This itinerary does not include a summit hike. If hiking is your priority, use our Fushimi Inari hike guide and omit the last temple rather than racing through all three.

Late morning: Tofuku-ji

Continue north with a walking buffer of about 25–35 minutes from the lower shrine area; use current pedestrian directions. Alternatively return to the railway and travel to Tofukuji Station, then walk approximately ten minutes as listed by the temple. Select the paid areas you want before buying tickets; a photograph of the Sanmon gate does not imply its interior is included.

For 2026 autumn visits, Tsutenkyo/Kaisando admission is ¥1,000 from November 14 to December 6, compared with the usual ¥600 adult ticket. The combined ticket is unavailable during that period. Hojo adult admission changes from ¥500 to ¥600 on November 1, 2026. Check the official page for your date, especially for separate evening or special openings. Do not assume a daytime ticket covers these.

Lunch before the uphill finish

Take a seated lunch near Tofukuji Station or along the approach before continuing east. No restaurant reservation or dietary suitability is implied by this route. Check menus and opening hours locally, and carry water. Allow 45–60 minutes for lunch so the final visit does not depend on rushing.

Afternoon: Sennyu-ji, if time and energy allow

Allow roughly 30–45 minutes for the uphill approach from Tofuku-ji, including navigation and rest. This is a planning buffer rather than a measured accessible route. Sennyu-ji lists a twenty-minute walk from Tofukuji Station. In winter, aim to arrive comfortably before its 16:00 admission cutoff; March–November admission ends at 16:30. Ceremonies may restrict access.

The precinct ticket is ¥500 for adults; special viewing is separately priced. Shinshoden is closed on the fourth Monday of each month, so do not plan around seeing its collection on that day. Photography and filming inside buildings are prohibited. The card photograph shows the exterior doorway of Butsuden Hall.

Rain, crowds and alternatives

The transfers and much of the sightseeing are outdoors. Slippery steps or persistent rain are good reasons to omit Sennyu-ji or shorten the torii walk. This route is not a guaranteed step-free itinerary. For a different day, see Kyoto art and museums, checking museum closure days before switching.

Pair it with another Kyoto day

Combine this southern route with our Arashiyama day on a separate day. Our first-time Kyoto itinerary helps compare it with the eastern Kyoto sights.
