A scenic train day and a separate hands-on museum day, with return tickets and simulator booking explained. This route favours time at the places themselves over collecting stops. The stay lengths and transfer buffers below are editorial planning estimates, not live schedules. Use the map to identify places and the official links to check your travel date.
Who this route suits
Day 1: Sagano Romantic Train and riverside
Book the scenic train and its return connection first. Choose the correct boarding station and do not confuse Torokko Kameoka with JR Kameoka. The riverside walk is deliberately modest so a delayed train does not force a race to another paid attraction.
Sagano Romantic Train (use your ticket for the boarding station)
Board at the station on your ticket and arrange the return before departure. The map pin is a landmark reference; Torokko stations and JR stations have different names.
Arashiyama Riverside
Keep the river walk short after the train journey. Follow public paths, allow for bridge crowds and do not enter the riverbank when access is restricted.
Allow at least 30 minutes before departure to find the platform and display the ticket. Plan the return separately; leave 45–60 minutes after return for the riverside approach and pauses.
Eat around Saga-Arashiyama after the train, leaving an hour. Carry water and check onboard food rules before purchase.
Check service notices before travelling. In severe weather, switch to the museum day when open; a boat ride is not an automatic substitute.
Day 2: Kyoto Railway Museum
Spend a substantial part of the day in the museum and choose experiences in advance. The former Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum is not a separate second attraction to duplicate on the map. Leave the afternoon flexible for exhibits rather than another city crossing.
Kyoto Railway Museum
Give the museum a substantial visit instead of treating it as a quick stop. Choose exhibits first; simulator and steam-train experiences have separate arrangements.
This day has one main destination. Allow 15–25 minutes for station approach and entry, with additional queue time on busy dates.
Use designated museum eating areas or take lunch nearby, checking re-entry rules before leaving. Do not eat while walking around exhibits.
This is the stronger wet-weather day, but some railway displays and transfers are outdoors. Check Wednesday and holiday exceptions.
Before you leave
Confirm opening dates, last admission and any timed tickets before starting. Carry a charged phone for tickets and directions, and leave room for queues and a seated meal. Historic paths may have steps or uneven surfaces; check the official accessibility details if you need a step-free route. Photos show the actual places at the time they were taken, not a guarantee of today’s foliage, displays or access.
