Before you go

Official references are dated below. Route choices, walking allowances and meal plans are our suggestions, not live directions. Recheck notices for your travel date.

Start here · station & exit

Start at JR Uji or Keihan Uji and follow the public route to Byodoin’s visitor entrance. The stations are on different sides of the river.

Getting between stops

Allow 30–45 minutes from Byodoin to Ujigami with the river crossing, then 15–25 minutes towards the Genji Museum. Leave extra time for tea and photographs.

Our planning suggestionAllowances include walking and waiting; use current directions for the actual service.
Entry, hours & reservations

Byodoin Temple: Check the interior-tour capacity and separate arrangements. The Tobira-e Room is listed as closed November 2–27, 2026; do not promise full museum access then. Ujigami Shrine: Use ordinary daytime precinct access; special ceremonies may restrict individual areas. The Tale of Genji Museum: Check the city museum’s current closing days and admission. Do not assume that all films or temporary displays are available every day.

Food & rest breaks

Have lunch and a tea break between the temple and river crossing. A shop purchase is not a booked tea ceremony; check availability separately.

Our planning suggestionMeal and rest stops are editorial suggestions, not restaurant reservations.
If it rains

Use the museums when open and shorten the riverside walk in heavy rain. Check river-path restrictions and do not substitute a closed gallery.

Who this route suits

A coherent Uji walking day with temple tickets, a river crossing and time for tea. This route favours time at the places themselves over collecting stops. The stay lengths and transfer buffers below are editorial planning estimates, not live schedules. Use the map to identify places and the official links to check your travel date.

Day 1: Byodoin and eastern Uji

Begin with Byodoin, then cross the river for Ujigami and the literary museum. Keep the day within Uji rather than trying to add a second town. Nintendo Museum is not an unreserved add-on to this day.

Byodoin Temple

Use the public visitor entrance for the temple and Hoshokan Museum, following signs to admission rather than the administrative office. Phoenix Hall interior access is a separate decision.

Ujigami Shrine

Cross to the quieter eastern side of Uji and visit the shrine respectfully. Keep the river crossing and slopes in mind when planning a wheelchair route.

The Tale of Genji Museum

Use the museum’s English explanations to add literary context to Uji. This is a useful indoor finish when it is open, rather than another distant attraction.

Allow 30–45 minutes from Byodoin to Ujigami with the river crossing, then 15–25 minutes towards the Genji Museum. Leave extra time for tea and photographs.

Have lunch and a tea break between the temple and river crossing. A shop purchase is not a booked tea ceremony; check availability separately.

Use the museums when open and shorten the riverside walk in heavy rain. Check river-path restrictions and do not substitute a closed gallery.

Before you leave

Confirm opening dates, last admission and any timed tickets before starting. Carry a charged phone for tickets and directions, and leave room for queues and a seated meal. Historic paths may have steps or uneven surfaces; check the official accessibility details if you need a step-free route. Photos show the actual places at the time they were taken, not a guarantee of today’s foliage, displays or access.
