Before you go

Start here · station & exit

Use Kiyomizu-Gojo Station and the temple’s uphill walking directions. Leave about half an hour for the approach and more if you need rests.

Getting between stops

Allow 50–70 minutes from Kiyomizu-dera to the KYOCERA Museum, including the descent and current transit connections. Use live directions rather than assuming a direct short walk.

Our planning suggestionOur transfer allowances include walking and waiting; confirm the actual connection on the day.
Entry, hours & reservations

Kiyomizu-dera Temple: Opening starts early, but closing time varies by season and special viewing. Check the temple calendar and pay the appropriate admission. Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art: 10:00–18:00, last entry 17:30; normally closed Mondays except holidays and December 28–January 2. Exhibition tickets vary.

Food & rest breaks

Meal stops below are editorial suggestions rather than verified restaurant reservations.

Our planning suggestionHave lunch in Higashiyama after the temple before travelling to Okazaki. Keep the museum ticket time well after the transfer buffer.
If it rains

Shorten the temple approach in poor weather and give more time to the museum when open; check Monday and exhibition-related closures.

Is this route for you?

One eastern Kyoto day followed by Kinkaku-ji, Ryoan-ji and Ninna-ji, with each side of the city kept together. Stop lengths and transfer buffers are our planning estimates, not official journey times. The map shows places rather than turn-by-turn directions; check live transport and the linked opening calendars before setting out.

Day 1: Kiyomizu-dera and Okazaki art

Start with the hilltop temple, then let an indoor art visit change the pace after lunch. This route suits travellers who want both a major temple and time to look at an exhibition rather than spend the whole day collecting temple entrances.

Kiyomizu-dera Temple

Allow time for the uphill approach, the public temple route and the descent. Keep to public streets on the way through Higashiyama.

Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art

Choose an exhibition before arrival. The restored museum building and the individual galleries are not all covered by one universal ticket.

Allow 50–70 minutes from Kiyomizu-dera to the KYOCERA Museum, including the descent and current transit connections. Use live directions rather than assuming a direct short walk. These allowances exclude meals and longer queues.

Day 2: Kinkaku-ji, Ryoan-ji and Ninna-ji

Keep the second day in northwest Kyoto. Begin with the Golden Pavilion, pause at Ryoan-ji’s rock garden, and finish at Ninna-ji. The final temple is optional if crowds or fatigue consume the buffer; two thoughtful visits are better than three rushed ones.

Kinkaku-ji Temple

Follow the visitor circuit around the Golden Pavilion. This is a garden-and-exterior viewing route, not a visit inside the pavilion.

Ryoan-ji Temple

Pause at the rock garden and leave time for the wider grounds. A quieter visit is more rewarding than hurrying through to the next temple.

Ninna-ji Temple

Choose the palace-and-garden visit or a shorter precinct walk. Cherry blossom season changes the access and fee arrangements.

Allow 30–45 minutes from Kinkaku-ji to Ryoan-ji, using a local bus or walking according to conditions, then 20–30 minutes towards Ninna-ji. Leave enough time before the final ticket booth closes. These allowances exclude meals and longer queues.

Meals, weather and choosing the date

Day 1: Have lunch in Higashiyama after the temple before travelling to Okazaki. Keep the museum ticket time well after the transfer buffer. Shorten the temple approach in poor weather and give more time to the museum when open; check Monday and exhibition-related closures.

Day 2: Take an hour for lunch between the first and second temple or after Ryoan-ji. Carry water and avoid scheduling the final temple after a long restaurant queue. The gardens and connections are exposed. In heavy rain, swap to the art day if its museum is open; covered viewing areas do not make this a fully indoor route.
