Official references are dated below. Route choices, walking allowances and meal plans are our suggestions, not live directions. Recheck notices for your travel date.

Start here · station & exit

Start at Keihan Shichijo and follow the museum’s access signs. The museum is east of the river, not inside Kyoto Station.

Getting between stops

Allow 45–60 minutes between the National Museum and MoMAK using rail and walking via the Sanjo/Higashiyama area.

Our planning suggestionOur transfer allowances include walking and waiting; confirm the actual connection on the day.
Entry, hours & reservations

Kyoto National Museum: The museum lists December 1–20, 2026 as garden-only opening with galleries closed. Check the exhibition calendar before buying tickets or planning an indoor visit. National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto: Normally 10:00–18:00 with Friday extension; last entry 30 minutes earlier. Monday/holiday and exhibition-change closures apply. Special exhibition prices vary.

Food & rest breaks

Meal stops below are editorial suggestions rather than verified restaurant reservations.

Our planning suggestionHave lunch between museums and leave a full break rather than eating while walking between galleries. Exhibition tickets do not imply café or re-entry access.
If it rains

This is a useful wet-weather plan only when both exhibitions are open. Transfers still involve outdoor walking; use a taxi if needed rather than rushing on slippery pavements.

Is this route for you?

A museum-focused Kyoto plan with two visits a day, exhibition-calendar checks and time for the transfers between galleries. Stop lengths and transfer buffers are our planning estimates, not official journey times. The map shows places rather than turn-by-turn directions; check live transport and the linked opening calendars before setting out.

Day 1: Kyoto National Museum and MoMAK

Begin with the exhibition available at Kyoto National Museum, then switch to modern art in Okazaki after lunch. Check both calendars first: a museum building can be accessible while the galleries you wanted are closed. In particular, December 1–20, 2026 is listed as garden-only at the National Museum.

Kyoto National Museum

Choose this stop for the exhibition actually running on your date. A museum visit does not guarantee that all collection galleries are open.

National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto

Choose the current exhibition or collection display and allow time to rest before leaving Okazaki.

Allow 45–60 minutes between the National Museum and MoMAK using rail and walking via the Sanjo/Higashiyama area. These allowances exclude meals and longer queues.

Day 2: Manga Museum and KYOCERA Museum

Give the Manga Museum time for reading before another change of style in Okazaki. Choose the KYOCERA exhibition in advance instead of assuming that every gallery is part of general admission.

Kyoto International Manga Museum

Leave time to browse and read, not just photograph the building. Check the available language shelves and exhibition programme on arrival.

Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art

Choose an exhibition before arrival. The restored museum building and the individual galleries are not all covered by one universal ticket.

Allow 30–45 minutes using the Tozai Line towards Higashiyama and walking to the KYOCERA Museum. These allowances exclude meals and longer queues.

Meals, weather and choosing the date

Day 1: Have lunch between museums and leave a full break rather than eating while walking between galleries. Exhibition tickets do not imply café or re-entry access. This is a useful wet-weather plan only when both exhibitions are open. Transfers still involve outdoor walking; use a taxi if needed rather than rushing on slippery pavements.

Day 2: Eat around Karasuma Oike before changing districts, then take a seated break before the second exhibition. Both museum visits are indoors when open, but Wednesday closure at the Manga Museum and Monday closures elsewhere mean the dates must be checked separately.
