Official references are dated below. Route choices, walking allowances and meal plans are our suggestions, not live directions. Recheck notices for your travel date.

Start here · station & exit

From Demachiyanagi, take an Eizan train for Kurama. Follow temple signs from Kurama Station; the approach climbs after the station area.

Getting between stops

Return to Kurama Station, take the train towards Kibuneguchi and connect with Kyoto Bus 33 towards Kibune. Budget 60–90 minutes between the temple visit and shrine arrival.

Our planning suggestionAllowances include walking and waiting; use current directions for the actual service.
Entry, hours & reservations

Kurama-dera Temple: Check temple admission and any cable transport operation separately. Mountain access can change with weather. Kifune Shrine: Use the shrine’s current visiting information. Kyoto Bus 33 to Kibune requires a separate fare outside the city Subway & Bus 1-day Pass coverage described by the tourism board.

Food & rest breaks

Have lunch near Kurama before the transfer or reserve a Kibune meal in advance. Do not count on a riverside table being available on arrival.

Our planning suggestionMeal and rest stops are editorial suggestions, not restaurant reservations.
If it rains

If mountain weather is poor, choose a city museum day. Do not use the forest trail as a shortcut in rain, darkness or reported closures.

Who this route suits

A northern Kyoto day using rail and local buses, with shrine time and realistic weather decisions. This route favours time at the places themselves over collecting stops. The stay lengths and transfer buffers below are editorial planning estimates, not live schedules. Use the map to identify places and the official links to check your travel date.

Day 1: Kurama-dera and Kifune

Visit Kurama first, then return to the rail line and continue towards Kibune. The mountain trail is deliberately not required: its condition, climbs and daylight needs deserve a separate decision. River-platform dining is optional and must be booked independently when operating.

Kurama-dera Temple

Allow time for the uphill temple visit. This plan returns by public transport rather than requiring the mountain trail to Kibune.

Kifune Shrine

Visit the shrine after reaching Kibune by local transport. River dining is optional and seasonal; it is not included or reserved by this itinerary.

Return to Kurama Station, take the train towards Kibuneguchi and connect with Kyoto Bus 33 towards Kibune. Budget 60–90 minutes between the temple visit and shrine arrival.

Have lunch near Kurama before the transfer or reserve a Kibune meal in advance. Do not count on a riverside table being available on arrival.

If mountain weather is poor, choose a city museum day. Do not use the forest trail as a shortcut in rain, darkness or reported closures.

Before you leave

Confirm opening dates, last admission and any timed tickets before starting. Carry a charged phone for tickets and directions, and leave room for queues and a seated meal. Historic paths may have steps or uneven surfaces; check the official accessibility details if you need a step-free route. Photos show the actual places at the time they were taken, not a guarantee of today’s foliage, displays or access.
