Our planning suggestionAllowances include walking and waiting; use current directions for the actual service.
Entry, hours & reservations

Kyoto Botanical Gardens: Garden hours listed: 09:00–17:00, last entry 16:00; conservatory 10:00–16:00, last entry 15:30. Check current admission and special-event tickets separately. Shimogamo Shrine: Special openings and ceremonies have separate conditions; this route uses an ordinary precinct visit.

Eat near Kitayama before the transfer or arrange a lunch break along the way. Carry water and avoid treating the shrine grounds as a picnic area.

If it rains

Use the conservatory only during its separate opening hours. Persistent rain is a reason to shorten both outdoor loops or switch to a museum.

Who this route suits

A garden visit followed by the wooded shrine approach, with seasonal expectations kept realistic. This route favours time at the places themselves over collecting stops. The stay lengths and transfer buffers below are editorial planning estimates, not live schedules. Use the map to identify places and the official links to check your travel date.

Day 1: Botanical collections and Tadasu no Mori

Begin with the garden’s current displays and choose a limited loop instead of covering every bed. The afternoon shrine changes the setting from a curated collection to a wooded sacred approach. Check the current display calendar if you are travelling for a particular plant.

Before you leave

Confirm opening dates, last admission and any timed tickets before starting. Carry a charged phone for tickets and directions, and leave room for queues and a seated meal. Historic paths may have steps or uneven surfaces; check the official accessibility details if you need a step-free route.
