Before you go

Official references are dated below. Route choices, walking allowances and meal plans are our suggestions, not live directions. Recheck notices for your travel date.

Start here · station & exit

Start inside Kyoto Station and follow building signs towards the public upper-level plazas. The Skyway is on the tenth floor and has its own opening hours.

Getting between stops

Allow 30–45 minutes to descend, leave on the correct side and walk towards To-ji. A Kintetsu connection to Toji Station is an alternative when appropriate.

Our planning suggestionAllowances include walking and waiting; use current directions for the actual service.
Entry, hours & reservations

Kyoto Station Building: The Skyway is listed as open 10:00–22:00; other terraces have different hours. Public station access does not imply every upper walkway is open. To-ji Temple: Check ordinary and special-viewing admission separately. Market days can bring additional crowds and do not guarantee access to normally closed interiors.

Food & rest breaks

Eat at Kyoto Station before the temple visit and leave a full seated break. Station dining floors have separate opening hours from the railway.

Our planning suggestionMeal and rest stops are editorial suggestions, not restaurant reservations.
If it rains

Use the station’s covered public spaces for the wetter part of the day; To-ji still requires outdoor walking. Omit open terraces in strong wind.

Who this route suits

A station-based Kyoto day pairing modern public spaces with a major temple south of the railway. This route favours time at the places themselves over collecting stops. Day 1: Station architecture and To-ji

Start with the station building after its upper public spaces open. Keep luggage in permitted storage and use lifts instead of carrying heavy bags onto the stairs. After lunch, change architectural eras at To-ji rather than travelling across the city to another crowded district.

Confirm opening dates, last admission and any timed tickets before starting. Carry a charged phone for tickets and directions, and leave room for queues and a seated meal. Historic paths may have steps or uneven surfaces; check the official accessibility details if you need a step-free route.
